Happy Halloween! I’m torn between being happy that the flooding has mostly subsided where live and being sad that Halloween is so miserable this year. But then I remember that one year where it snowed on Halloween and I don’t mind it as much.
Anyway, there are so many cool things happening around NYC this week! I’m going to cut back on images and include more details, so I can share even more events.
(Noting as always that I don’t receive anything for sharing these events. They’re just fun, hand-picked things that I get in my email for the coming week.) Enjoy!
Cool Things Happening In NYC, November 01-07
Godzilla in Context: 70 Years of Monster History
When: November 1 @ 4 p.m.
Where: Japan Society (333 E 47th St.)
Celebrate Godzilla’s 70th birthday with a special event at the Japan Society. Learn about the legacy of the kaiju and explore its role in postwar Japan. This discussion is led by Steve Ryfle, co-author of Godzilla: The First 70 Years: The Official Illustrated History of the Japanese Productions. Use the code KAIJUFRIEND to snag a free ticket, and find more info at the website here.
Advanced Sake Studies Certification
When: November 3 and 10 @ 10 a.m.
Where: Industry City BLDG 6 @ Brooklyn Kura (34 34th St)
Okay, this one is pricey but it’s super cool so I have to share. This course spans two full-day classes, and teaches participants everything they need to know about the history and making process of Sake. You’ll learn how Sake is made, different varieties, and even try your hand (or.. tongue, I guess?) at Sake blind tasting. Very cool stuff, if it’s in your budget. More info can be found here.
Unsound Festival

When: November 1-2 @ 7:30 p.m.
Where: Lincoln Center
This festival, directed by Mat Schulz, might just change the way you look at music. The weekend is packed full of contemporary, avant-garde music that uses sound and instruments in weird and unique ways. More info.
Indigenous Dance Stories: Native American Heritage Month with Bare Feet
When: November 6 @ 6 p.m.
Where: South Street Seaport Museum
Celebrate the rich traditions and cultures of Indigenous people around the world at this special evening program. There will be dance, film, and stories, including a performances by Louis Mofsie and the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers. This event is free, but you should register here.
Rooftop Cinema Club
When: Ongoing
Where: Rooftop Cinema Club (60 W 37th St.)
This is an ongoing thing, not a limited-time one, but I had no idea it existed until this week. And I thought the Drafthouse Alamo was fancy! This Midtown spot lets you take in some awesome city views as you sip a cocktail and enjoy a classic film. Sound like a good time to me! This week’s showings include Pretty Woman, Charlie’s Angels, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and much more. See details and book tickets here.
