Well, the warm spell is finally over. It’s been a chilly week and I’m finally breaking out my coat and scarf. Luckily, some of the winter markets are back in town. Head out to a winter market to warm up! I’ll be there, drinking gluhwein and eating Wafels & Dinges, and trying to distract myself from the coming winter. (Yes, I know Wafels & Dinges has permanent locations now. It’s not the same.) Brr.
I’ll put Winter Market dates at the bottom of this post. But first, here are some more hand-picked cool events happening around NYC this upcoming week that popped up in my inbox. (Noting as always that I don’t receive anything for sharing these events. They’re just fun, hand-picked things that I get in my email for the coming week.) Enjoy!
Cool Things Happening In NYC, November 08-14
Pumpkin Smash
When: November 9, 12 – 3 p.m.
Where: Avenue C and 9th Street
What happens to all the pumpkins that people put up for Halloween? They get gleefully destroyed after the holiday at events like these! Bring your pumpkin, jack-o-lantern, or other gourd to the LES Ecology Center to smash it up and help it become part of the city’s compost. Plus, bring the kids to make it a fun festival of a day, with live music, Earth Loom Weaving, food scraps painting (which I’m sure is more fun and less disgusting than it sounds), and more. This is a free event! More info here.
LitFilm Festival
When: November 10 – 16
Where: Brooklyn Central Library, 10 Grand Army Plz
LitFilm is a film festival that’s all about writers and literature, and it’s back at Brooklyn’s Central Library this week. This year, you can catch seven literary films, as well as readings and other special events. Featured films include Orwell: 2+2=5, Mario Vargas Llosa: The Story of the Novelist Who Would Be President, Wislawa Szymborska: Life is bearable. At times., and more. Honestly, I just really relate to that last title. More info here.
Intrepid Museum’s Annual Veterans Day Ceremony
When: November 11, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Where: Intrepid Museum
The Intrepid Museum will hold its annual Veteran’s Day ceremony next week to celebrate all those who served in the United States Armed Forces. Stop by to see a commemorative wreath being laid in the Hudson River to honor the Intrepid’s former crew. You don’t need special tickets for this, just regular admission. More info here.
Trans Voices in Horror Launch Event
When: November 13, 7 – 9 p.m.
Where: The Twisted Spine, 306 Grand St
Join The Twisted Spine to celebrate the launch of Bloodletter Magazine’s Trans Voices in Horror zine. Stop by for readings from the new collection, which features the works of trans poets and writers. The event is free, and all proceeds from zine sales will go to the Advocates for Trans Equality nonprofit organization. Did I also just really want to mention The Twisted Spine, the brand-new (opened in September) horror-centric NYC bookstore? Yes. Yes I did. But it’s also a great cause, so give it a peek.
Note: The store is slowly reopening after flooding so check on their Instagram for more info before you head out! More info here.
